The Morrison Government has let down Far North Queensland with no new funding for social or remote housing in the Federal Budget.

Far North Queenslanders are struggling financially with unemployment skyrocketing and 46,000 people in the Leichhardt electorate hit by cuts to JobKeeper and JobSeeker.

They have been left behind by the Morrison Government which has failed to make affordable housing more accessible to regional Queensland.

There is a dire need for more social housing – but it was not mentioned once when the Treasurer announced the Budget.

Cairns-based Labor Senator Nita Green said the Budget papers also confirmed no new funding would support remote housing in Queensland.

“The LNP and Warren Entsch failed to explain when their modest $105 million promise for remote housing in the Cape will be met,” Senator Green said.

“What’s worse is that the Morrison Government has no plans to invest any further money into remote housing in the forward estimates.

“Unlike the Government, Labor has a plan to support people in need of social housing and to provide work for regional Queenslanders employed in the residential construction industry.”

Labor is calling on the Morrison Government to invest half a billion dollars to fast-track urgent repairs to social housing.

Twenty-five per cent of Australia’s social housing needs urgent repair and maintenance. That’s 100,000 homes.

This investment would be a win-win. It would provide work for local tradies and fix homes that need to be fixed.
