Queensland Labor Senator Nita Green is calling on the Morrison Government to ensure Australia offers whatever assistance we can in the search for possible survivors onboard the sunken Gulf Livestock 1 vessel.

Mount Isa veterinarian Lukas Orda was among the crew on board the ship which capsized in Japanese waters on Wednesday, September 2.

There is still hope more survivors may emerge after Japanese rescue crews found a sailor in a life raft.

Senator Green said it was up to the Morrison Government to reassure the families of missing Australians that every effort was being taken to find loved ones.

“Australian has extensive experience and expertise with search and rescue missions and the Morrison Government should be offering it to help this search and rescue mission,” Senator Green said.

“This must be an absolutely terrible time for Mr Orda’s family. The families of Australians on board the ship deserve to know that every possible effort is being taken.

“I have written to Foreign Minister Marise Payne to seek further information on what measures the Federal Government is taking to recover these missing Australians.”
