New data reveals 27,281 workers in Leichhardt would be worse off and $24.3 million will be ripped out of the local economy every fortnight if the Morrison Government proceeds with planned cuts to JobKeeper on September 28.

Cuts to JobKeeper will see some local businesses and workers lose access completely, while others will have their payments slashed by between $300 and $750 per fortnight.

Scott Morrison and the LNP have no comprehensive jobs plan to replace this support at a time when one million Australians are out of work and unemployment is only expected to increase further.

Cairns-based Labor Senator Nita Green warned these cuts were coming at the worst possible time for businesses and workers in Far North Queensland.

“We had to fight hard to make sure the LNP didn’t completely take away JobKeeper. Since that decision the economy has gone into recession,” Senator Green said.

“That’s why Warren Entsch and Scott Morrison should reconsider these cuts to JobKeeper on behalf of the thousands of workers and business relying on it.

“Scott Morrison’s premature cuts to JobKeeper is undermining the potential for the program to protect Australians during this difficult time.

“One example of the LNP’s inconsistent approach to JobKeeper is the fact that local universities like JCU and CQU miss out while an American owned university based in Sydney qualifies for support.”

The Government’s move to cut JobKeeper supports comes after the decision to exclude millions of workers including short-term casuals, local government workers and temporary visa holders.
