The Morrison Government and Warren Entsch has let down thousands of Far North Queenslanders who are on the waitlist for social housing.

In the Leichhardt electorate, there are 2400 people experiencing homelessness and a shortfall of 5300 social housing dwellings.

The Morrison Government has ignored this crisis by failing to invest a single extra dollar in social housing in the Budget.

Meanwhile, Far North Queenslanders continue to wait for the LNP to honour their promise to invest $105 million in remote housing.

Cairns-based Senator Nita Green said the pandemic had shown that having a safe and secure home is a health and economic issue that cannot be ignored.

“The Federal Budget dealt a blow to Far North Queensland’s remote housing needs with no new or ongoing funding in the forward estimates,” Senator Green said.“Of the money committed before the last election, only 4.7 percent of that one off commitment had been spent.

“Warren Entsch and Scott Morrison have walked away from funding housing in Leichhardt, and failed to deliver on their election promise, even though we know overcrowding leads to terrible social and economic outcomes.”

Labor is calling on the Morrison Government to act this anti-poverty week – an annual event shining a spotlight on poverty to encourage Australians to focus on a solution.
