Scott Morrison has abandoned apprentices and cut TAFE funding in a blow which will make it harder for locals to get jobs coming out of the recession.

Cairns-based Labor Senator Nita Green used National Skills Week to remind Far North Queenslanders the LNP cut more than $3 billion from TAFE and training, and 140,000 apprentices and trainees have been lost nationwide.

“We have lost 932 apprentices and trainees in Leichhardt and 1453 apprentices and trainees in Kennedy since the LNP came to office,” Senator Green said.

“We will need tradies and other critical workers to help our nation recover after coronavirus – to lift us out of recession – so why won’t Scott Morrison do more to train young locals now?”

“If we don’t invest in skills, young Queenslanders will miss out on local jobs during our recovery.” Senator Green said.
