The Morrison Government has failed to commit any funding for social housing in the Federal Budget - letting down more than 1200 families in Townsville who are on the social housing waitlist.

North Queenslanders are struggling financially with unemployment skyrocketing and almost 29,000 people in the Herbert electorate hit by cuts to JobKeeper and JobSeeker.

They have been left behind by the Morrison Government which has failed to make affordable housing more accessible to regional Queensland.

There is a dire need for more social housing – but it was not mentioned once when the Treasurer announced the Budget.

Queensland Labor Senator Nita Green said Labor had a vision to invest in social housing and support workers bearing the brunt of the Morrison Recession.

“Labor is calling on the Morrison Government to invest half a billion dollars to fast-track urgent repairs to social housing,” Senator Green said.

“This would be a win-win, providing work for local tradies and fixing homes that need to be fixed.

“Phillip Thompson should stand up for his electorate and call on the Morrison Government to follow Labor’s lead and provide this boost to vulnerable families in Townsville.”
